Fidel Castro: Giving up the reins? A closer look may show otherwise.
3 January 2008
This article by WSI Research Associate Danielle Barav explores the hidden meanings behind Fidel Castro's letter to the news show, Mesa Redonda, on December 17th, suggesting that even if he gives up his title of president, he has no plans to end his political influence. This statement was further reinforced in a December 28th letter to the National Assembly. Though newspapers across the world printed news that Castro may formally and finally relinquish power, his letter shows that even if he does not officially hold the title of president, his political influence will continue. Castro also ruminates on past experiences with the former Prime Minister of Canada, and the current defense budget for the United States, issuing a thinly veiled threat to foreign nations not to interfere in Cuban politics or they will pay a heavy price.
