WSI Hosts Conference with Russian think-tank on US-Russian Relations, Nuclear Weapons

12 October 2006

On October 12-13, 2006, the World Security Institute will jointly host a conference with the Institute of Strategic Stability (ISS) based in Moscow. The main purpose of the collaboration is to bring experts from both countries together to discuss emerging nuclear weapons policies in both the United States and Russia. Chinese nuclear experts will attend part of this meeting as well. The topics to be discussed are: the utility of nuclear weapons in defending against new and traditional security threats to Russia and United States; the role of START-I and the Moscow Treaty, and the perspective of new arrangements on nuclear weapons and missile defenses; U.S. and Russian concepts for new nuclear weapons; the reform of military nuclear industries in the United States and Russia; nuclear terrorism, and prospects for U.S.-Russian cooperation in tackling it; challenges of nuclear proliferation and perspectives on the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT); and the maintenance of arsenals in major nuclear powers in the absence of testing. A detailed agenda is forthcoming.
