Nikolai Zlobin

Dr. Nikolai Zlobin is director of the Russia and Eurasia Project at the World Security Institute. A former professor at Moscow State University, Zlobin joined the Institute in Washington, D.C., in 2001 as a senior fellow and director of Russian and Eurasian programs. He is a leading expert on international security; terrorism; relations between the United States and Russia, as well as the United States and the nations of the former Soviet Union; and the politics and history of Russia, Asia and Eurasia.

Zlobin writes a regular column for the major Russian daily, Izvestia, and has been a contributor to many international publications. He serves on the editorial boards of several academic periodicals, and is the executive editor of Demokratizatsiya, the Journal of Post- Soviet Democratization. He is president emeritus of Washington Profile, an international news and analysis agency, which he founded in 2001. Zlobin is a frequent commentator on global and regional affairs for television and radio stations around the world. He is a former political adviser to the Kremlin and hosted his own television talk show. The author of 11 books and more than 200 academic articles published in more than 15 languages, Zlobin's latest book, International Communications, was published in 2004 by M.E. Sharpe. His editorial opinions have appeared in The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, International Herald Tribune, and the Chicago Tribune, among other publications. Zlobin co-authored the first non-communist high school history textbook used in Russia and other post-Soviet counties. He also is the recipient of several prestigious teaching and research grants, including two MacArthur Foundation awards, two from the Truman Institute and another from the Soros Foundation.

He holds a B.A. in history and an M.A. in political science from Moscow State University, where he also earned his Ph.D.
