This project addresses the urgent need to understand and evaluate the national interests and intentions of the United States and Russia toward post-Soviet Eurasia. The programs analyze the likelihood of future U.S.-Russian conflict or cooperation in the region, common goals and strategies, and possible cooperative measures that can be taken to reduce the likelihood of conflict. There may be important opportunities for the two countries to depart from their current inconsistent, improvisational and reactionary policy approaches and pursue a joint cooperative agenda in the region to build strategic, long-term engagement with Eurasia. It might be possible, to a certain degree, to merge U.S. and Russian national interests with the interests of the countries of Eurasia and other major regional players, not only to enhance Russian-American bilateral relations but also to advance development and security in the region.
