Mark Burgess, Director
Established in 2000, the World Security Institute Brussels office follows and analyzes the security policies of the European Union and its individual member states, and serves as a source of defence expertise to media and decision-makers in EU institutions, EU member states, and the United States. The office also advises members of the European Parliament, the European Commission and the Council of the European Union on external security-related matters.
Mark Burgess is the director of WSI Brussels. Previously, Burgess was a research analyst at the Center for Defense Information – a division of WSI, where he also led the terrorism project. While his main research area is the study of terrorism, Burgess has also written and spoken extensively on a variety of other security issues, including peacekeeping and the war in Iraq, and has been published and quoted in a wide range of U.S. and international outlets. His latest publications include the entries on "Peacekeeping," "The War on Terrorism," and "Homeland Security" in the newly released Encyclopedia of War and American Society (Sage Publications, 2006). In addition to heading WSI Brussels, he continues to manage the CDI Terrorism Project.
